ATTRACTIONS

Unplug:

You’re on river time so prepare to slow down, relax and discover one of North Carolina’s hidden coastal gems. Pungo Creek Retreat is located right in town and close to everything by bike, walking or car. Bicycles and walking are great ways to get around town since there’s not a lot of traffic in Belhaven making it very safe to ride a bike or take a leisurely stroll at any time of day or night.

By far one of the best things about Belhaven is the water. Many of our guests bring their boats, kayaks, canoes and stand up paddle boards (SUP). If you need assistance to get out on the water we can help as we work with several local guides and eco tour companies. We’ll be glad to make recommendations and put you in touch with these folks or point you in the right direction to launch your vessel as there are several boat ramps and put-ins within a quarter of a mile of the property and multiple places for canoe/kayak access in the area.

Explore:

We have folks from all over the east coast stay with us that are here to see the black bears that inhabit the area. We have a lot of them! The best spot to see the bears would be out at the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, which is 54 minutes by car, but worth the ride. It’s not uncommon to see black bear and their cubs playing in the open fields, climbing trees and swimming in canals beside the roads. Every so often you’ll see a bear running across the road so keep an eye open for them just as you would deer crossing the roads. As a reminder, please do not approach or feed the bears.

Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge (Lake Mattamuskeet) is approximately 1 hour away and if you want to discover the best beach on the east coast take the Swan Quarter Ferry over to Ocracoke Island. It’s a 2.5 hour ferry ride but the village of Ocracoke is amazing and the beaches are beautiful. You can make it a day trip or spend the night on Ocracoke.

Experience:

There’s a bunch of little shops in town that sell everything from the latest coastal fashions to chic country ensembles, antiques and knick knacks. Check out shops like Hand Picked Sister inside the Ace Hardware, Dilly Jeans, Market 32, Attic Life and The Refinery.

The ICW Brewery is a nice spot to relax and the brewery’s deck faces the town docks and harbor for peaceful views. Check out the art gallery right next door for the very best in local and nationally recognized artists.
